Heat Mirror

Heat Mirror technology allows extensive use of glass to improve the appearance of a building without compromising architectural design or occupant comfort.

All Heat Mirror products, whether energy efficient glass units or laminated products, employ the unique Southwall Technologies Inc. patterned technology.Heat Mirror products reflect heat back to its source, to the outside in summer, to the inside in winter, by virtue of special emissivity sputtering technology. With Heat Mirror products greater areas of glass with optimum natural light transmission can be used, whilst stringent building energy conservation requirements can still be met and even surpassed.Heat Mirror energy efficient insulating glass units consist of a wide variety of insulation window products. Heat Mirror is not necessarily highly reflective in appearance, as the name might suggest, but refers rather to the ability of the products to reflect heat back to its source.

Process
The patented construction of Heat Mirror energy efficient insulating glass units is unique. Special “spectrum selective” coatings, only a few atoms thick are deposited on a PET Mylar film which is suspended within the air space of the insulating glass unit creating two airspaces in effect, a triple a glazed unit. The Mylar sputter coated surface(s) enables the unit to achieve a high level of energy solar heat control, whilst still maintaining good visible light transmission.

A range of different Heat Mirror coatings are available, which, when combined with clear body-tinted or coated glass, provide valuable spectrum-selective and effective energy-efficient control properties.

Superior insulation performance
Heat Mirror offers insulation performance superior to any air-filled, low emissivity, double glazed unit on the market today with twice the insulation performance of standard insulating glass units and more than four times the performance of single glazed windows.Such superior performance has a dramatic impact on the costs of heating or cooling a home or commercial building.It can also reduce the initial capital equipment costs for the HVAC system by enabling downsizing of the system.

Solar control
Whilst many low-emissivity coatings are designed to let the heat in, Heat Mirror coatings control solar heat, cutting it by more than 50% comparedwith standard double glazed units. Its performance in this respect is also superior to standard tinted glass and low-emissivity coated glass unit products, even with the addition of argon gas filled cavities.

Ultra-violet fading control
Heat Mirror products prevent the transmittance of 99.5% of harmful, solar ultra-violet radiation and has been proved to reduce fading on soft furnishings by a factor of three to four compared to ordinary, double insulating glass. Heat Mirror also performs significantly better than low emissivity coated glass in this respect.

Improved year round comfort
Since Heat Mirror products keep undesirable summer heat out and winter heat in, windows are far more comfortable to be near all the year round. Room temperatures are more uniform floor space is maximized and, if there is high external humidity, less condensation will occur on the glass.

Improved sound control
Heat Mirror’s unique construction provides a 32% reduction of external noise in comparison to single glazing, and a 12% reduction in comparison to standard, double glazing.Improved plant growth By reducing temperature swings in proximity to glass areas Heat Mirror products create a healthier environment for the growth of indoor plants and prevent scorching of their leaves.
